About the Yale Young African Scholars Program
The Yale Young African Scholars Program is designed for African secondary school students who plan to pursue tertiary education and want to make a meaningful impact as young leaders.
Participants develop academic and leadership skills while receiving guidance on university admissions, financial aid applications, career exploration, and the transition from secondary school to university. They also join a network of students and young leaders from across Africa.
In 2027, YYAS will continue with both online and residential programming. Students can indicate their preferred program option during the application process, but they can only be admitted to one YYAS program.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Age: Be between 14 and 18 years old on the first day of the selected 2027 program.
- English: Be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
- Citizenship or Residency: Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. Refugees living in an African country may also apply.
- School Location: Currently attend school in an African country.
- Grade Level: Be currently enrolled in 10th or 11th grade, or an international equivalent.
